Midlands cricket venues to host 72 finals between 2020 2024

Lord's will play host to the new T20 competition & two Tests

Yorkshire and Lancashire are the major beneficiaries after the European Central Bank announced the five Test venues for the visit of Australia in the 2023 Ashes series on Wednesday.

Yet the fact that Headingley has now been confirmed by the England and Wales Cricket Board as one of five venues is testament to the hard work undertaken by Yorkshire County Cricket Club chief executive Mark Arthur, and many others, to upgrade the facilities.

Meanwhile, the European Central Bank confirmed the eight teams for the new T20 competition will be based out of the five 2019 Ashes venues, plus Trent Bridge, Ageas Bowl and Cardiff.

While the European Central Bank has yet to officially confirm the teams that will contest the new competition, it has dropped a significant clue by announcing the venues that will stage matches from 2020-2024.

"We placed our commitment to the local community at the heart of our bid to host the new T20 competition, and I look forward to welcoming more of our neighbours to the ground in the years to come as cricket reaches out to a new and wider audience".

Gloucestershire, Durham, Glamorgan and Hampshire will all host England one-day internationals at their grounds throughout this period, with the latter two also set to stage T20 internationals.

"Emirates Old Trafford has been a Test venue for over 130 years and we are proud of our rich heritage and history in hosting global fixtures".

The ECB further explained that the venues would be fit around "new partnerships" and "new teams".

Awarding worldwide cricket to revenue-hungry grounds is a thankless task.

Emma Gray, Director of Marketing & Communications at Visit Birmingham, said: "International cricket at a packed Edgbaston Stadium is one of Birmingham's iconic summer images and has played a part in the city welcoming a 17% increase in domestic tourists and a 52% rise in overseas guests in the last five years".
