Oxfam admits 'serious error' after re-hiring man sacked over Haiti misconduct

Archbishop Tutu resigned amid a backlash against the charity

Archbishop Desmond Tutu said he was "saddened by the impact of the allegations on the many thousands of good people who have supported Oxfam's righteous work".

"Hiring him, even in an emergency as a short-term consultant, was a serious error and should never have happened", a statement said.

The British charity has come under sharp criticism for its handling of allegations that staff members hired prostitutes in Haiti following the devastating 2010 natural disaster.

Tutu expressed his disappointment in Oxfam on Thursday, after allegations of immorality and possible criminality involving humanitarian workers linked to the charity surfaced on Tuesday, according to a statement.

"Parties every week? Fancy villas?"

It was reported last week that some Oxfam staff paid for sex with prostitutes in Haiti while in the country after the devastating 2010 natural disaster.

He suggests charities should have a protocol with governments, whereby whenever there is an accusation of child sex against any of their staff, they report it immediately to the country of jurisdiction - the country of nationality of the person undertaking the crime, and the country of the crime itself.

Under his leadership there, in 2006, staff used prostitutes in the charity's premises, according to United Kingdom newspaper Observer, claims that Oxfam said it could not corroborate. Women paid with money from the organisation?

He was then hired by Oxfam as a country director in Chad.

Earlier in the week, Oxfam's Deputy Chief Executive Penny Lawrence said that she was resigning amid the scandal.

Oxfam said Mr Berrendorf, who was in the post from 2012 to 2017, was dismissed for mismanagement.

He said he resigned his post running the Oxfam operation after the 2010 Haiti natural disaster because he had failed to exercise sufficient control over staff accused of sexual misconduct.

In a four-page open letter to a broadcaster in his native Belgium, he said an unnamed former employee was the source of reports that first broke in The Times.

The Government has written to all British charities working overseas demanding "absolute assurances" that they are protecting vulnerable people and referring complaints to authorities.
