One Telugu character that is making iPhones crash worldwide

In smartphones this year the cut will be less than the iPhone X

All it takes to trigger today's iOS 11 flaw is to send someone a single character in the Indian language Telugu, according to the Italian blog Mobile World.

If you do get sent the character, you should get someone else to message you and delete the message and the thread containing it. The bug appears to affect most messaging apps, including iMessage, WhatsApp, Gmail, Outlook for iOS, or Facebook Messenger. To fix the problem yourself, you somehow have to get into the app that crashed and remove the message with the character.

In the last few years, many iOS bugs have been discovered - and fixed - where sending a particular text, image or video message would cause the Messages app to crash. In this case the entire SpringBoard may crash.

Here's a tweet that shows how the Telugu character crashes the apps. Reports suggest that the bug can also be exploited on Safari and Messages on macOS as well as the Apple Watch. These tips apply to iOS 11 specifically, so if you haven't upgraded yet be sure to do so to gain these great new features on your iOS devices. It causes certain apps on Apple devices to freeze up and become unresponsive.

The offending character is used in the written version of a Dravidian language in India, which is spoken by approximately 70 million people, 7 News reports.

Still, until that updated version is released - or, indeed, until Apple pushes out a patch before that point comes - it's a frustrating and potentially very disruptive issue. Share your thoughts on the new character bug causing iMessage and other apps to crash in the comments. Also, starting that month, all apps must be created based on the iOS 11 SDK, though this doesn't necessarily mean they must support new features - just compiled with the latest SDK. Apple has responded to the discovery of the bug, and says that a fix will soon be coming via a minor iOS update.
