United Kingdom ex-soccer coach convicted of 43 child sex abuse charges

The former Crewe Alexandra coach and Manchester City scout, who has already served three jail terms for similar offences involving 16 other victims, could face further prosecution after an additional 86 complainants came forward to say they too were abused by him.

A cheer of "yes" came from the public gallery where six victims sat with family members as the final verdicts were read out.

However, the outwardly flashy, charming Bennell used both clubs as vehicles to groom and manipulate pre-pubescent boys before sexually abusing them.

Bennell, 64, was found guilty of indecent assault, buggery and attempted buggery against 11 victims - all boys aged between eight and 15 - in a complex trial in Liverpool in northwest England.

This latest trial - his fourth conviction for child sex offences - heard evidence that he abused players at his home, on football trips to north Wales, Spain and the US and even at Crewe's Gresty Road ground.

"We are no longer afraid of you, Barry Bennell", Fallon said, breaking into a half-smile.

Bennell's trial at Liverpool Crown Court heard he coached a number of junior boys' teams in the early to mid-1980s which provided youth recruits for City.

Shaking with emotion, the victims of Barry Bennell told of their decades of trauma inflicted by the paedophile football coach who destroyed their lives.

Bennell, who is now known as Richard Jones, has been described by prosecutors as a "child molester on an industrial scale". He groomed not only the young players but their families, convincing parents that their boys were safe in his care.

He said: "If we use our phones we can't take pictures of the children and put it on the Stoke City Twitter or Facebook page".

Mr Barnes told Dispatches: "He said we've had one or two reports about him. mucking about with kids or something like that".

"All victims", City said in a statement, "were entitled to expect full protection from the kind of harm they endured". Between 1985 and 1992, he was on the coaching staff at Crewe.

Questions have been asked about City's role in Bennell's abuse, and whether they could have done more to stop the former youth coach, who provided players for the club.

"The Professional Football Association do it well, so I think at the moment it's alright".

He regularly drove some of his victims to the club's then Maine Road stadium and Platt Lane training ground - although there was no evidence that abuse took place at either location.
