Flu deaths go up in Fayette County

Delaware Public Media

Eleven people in Monroe County have died this season as a result of the flu.

Health experts around the country have reported overwhelming numbers of patients coming into emergency rooms with flu-like symptoms, including cough, fever, aches and chills, breathing issues and more.

The Department of Health said flu activity for the week ending February 17 decreased in every part of the state except the southeast, but it's too early to say whether the season has peaked. Even still, the California Department of Public Health expects several more weeks of flu activity and the mortality rate could continue to climb because it can be days or weeks after the initial infection that complications can set in. One male resident who was in his late 80s died within the past month, while one female resident in her mid-70s died within the past two weeks and one female resident in her early 60s died within the past week. All but one had an underlying health condition.

The vaccine offers the best protection from the flu and reduces severe outcomes should an individual become ill with the flu.

The flu season appears to be winding down for East Tennessee as well as most of the U.S.

Estimates in recent years say the vaccine can lower the average person's risk of getting sick with the flu anywhere from 40% to 60% when there's a good match between the circulating flu viruses and those used to create the vaccine, the CDC says.

Flu activity is now widespread in most of the U.S.

The viability of the flu vaccine changes each year, as per the CDC.

Twenty people were tested for the flu overnight Monday, according to Susan Wyatt with UTMC.

Since Oct. 1, 2017, 19,398 laboratory-confirmed influenza-associated hospitalizations have been reported through the Influenza Hospitalization Network to the Centers for Disease Control.
