Kate Middleton defies black dress code at BAFTA, draws backlash on Twitter

Princess Charlotte and Prince George with Kate Middleton and Prince William

Prior to the awards, there was speculation as to whether Kate would comply with the unofficial dress code of wearing black in support of the Times Up movement. This was in continuation to the blackout followed at previous award functions like the Golden Globes, which was carried out in solidarity with the Time's Up initiative against sexual harassment.

And all eyes were on Kate - who is seven months pregnant - as royal watchers were eager to see her dress choice for the evening, which turned out to be a deep green cap-sleeved gown by Jenny Packham.

"She's an extraordinary woman and she can wear whatever she wants to wear". She accessorized with a black clutch and heels along with emerald jewelry.

The group's twitter account posted messages criticising the United Kingdom government's upcoming Domestic Violence and Abuse Bill during the ceremony.

True to form, Middleton made sure to sneak in several noir accents that subtly confirmed her support of the modern-day cause.

"The Duchess of Cambridge did as much as she could do given who she is and what she represents", says Hanson. Hayek flaunted a black floral Gucci number.

Nearly every female actress on the red carpet donned black, including A-listers, Jennifer Lawrence and Angelina Jolie. While a red carpet black-out is every stylist's nightmare, the sartorial displays on show proved that black did not have to mean boring. In her habitual thigh-high silhouette, Jolie opted for an off-the-shoulder sweet-heart black velvet gown by Ralph and Russo, elegantly accessorised with chandelier earrings. Walking the red carpet alongside her was her guest, First They Killed My Father producer Rithy Panh.

Announcing a fund to support women and men battling workplace abuse - modeled on the "Time's Up" movement in the USA - the stars said "with our collective power, we can galvanise others". Gesturing to her dress while accepting the best actress award, she said: "As Martin [McDonagh] said, I have a little trouble with compliance". "The women on twitter tonight shaming the duchess for wearing dark green need to give their pretend feminist heads a shake!"

Octavia Spencer lit up the carpet with a long black sparkly number.

The Duchess showed off her growing baby bump. "Not black, so in line with protocol, but dark enough to be a nod of support".
