Russian Winter Olympics medallist charged with doping

As USA gets bounced, it's up to Canada to shield Gary Bettman from further criticism over NHL Olympics decision

Krushelnitsky returned a positive test for meldonium at the Pyeongchang Olympics after winning a bronze medal in mixed doubles with his wife, Anastasia Bryzgalova.

The OAR delegation issued a statement on Tuesday which stated "the circumstances of the case, do not provide any answers to the questions as to how and when meldonium could have gotten into the athlete's body".

"Knowing that we may have been robbed and having to wait to see what happens is obviously emotional, and very stressful", said Nedregotten, whose medal hopes were dashed after an 8-4 defeat by the Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR) pair.

"I am categorically opposed to doping and have always strived to follow the conformities of all anti-doping rules with maximum attention".

Earlier the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) confirmed the positive result and expressed "deep regret" over the incident.

Krushelnitsky has another explanation for why he tested positive for meldonium.

For anti-doping authorities at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, all eyes were on the Russian athletes.

"I am ready to confirm that not once in the whole time that I have been in sport have I taken any banned substance or competed dishonestly in any way", he said.

But it said the concentration of meldonium was "absolutely insignificant from the point of view of any sort of therapeutic effect on the human body", adding that Krushelnitsky's previous tests had come back negative.

The IOC suspended the Russian Olympic committee a year ago in connection with a massive doping scheme at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi but allowed 168 athletes to compete under neutral uniforms and without the Russian national flag.

Meldonium, which was banned in sports in 2016, is the same substance that led to Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova being banned from WTA competition for 18 months. "I hope this will not influence the decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on February 24 on the return of Russian Federation into the Olympic family". And Russia also has the possibility of being reinstated for the closing ceremony, allowing its athletes to march under their national flag.

"We fully share and support the WADA and the IOC's zero tolerance attitude to doping and take all the required measures so that the offenders bear the utmost responsibility for that", the delegation said.

The curling team trained in Japan in January, bringing in some Russian athletes who had not qualified for the Olympics as practice partners.

Hamilton said it is Krushelnitsky's responsibility to stay clean, no matter how a banned substance may have made its way into the Russian's system.

Japanese short track speedskater Kei Saito was the first anti-doping procedure announced at the Games.
