Intel teams up with manufacturers to develop 5G laptops for 2019

Intel has seen growing interest in 5G applications for different form factors

Intel has pledged to unveil a concept 5G-connected PC - a detachable 2-in-1 - at Mobile World Congress next week, livestreaming video to it via 5G. The company expects the first shipping products using this silicon to begin shipping in the second half of 2019.

Intel will be giving a sneak peek at a concept 5G-connected PC during Mobile World Congress next week.

The next generation of wireless connectivity looks promising and bundled with Windows 10, this will be how Microsoft, Intel, and their partners look to convince users to upgrade their hardware.

Dell, HP, Lenovo and Microsoft will be rolling out Windows PCs equipped with Intel's XMM 8000 series 5G modem, paving the way for always-connected and high performance laptops.

"This is not just PC clamshell [laptop] form factors", Intel's Rob Topol told reporters this week.

In addition to 5G, Intel at MWC18 will showcase 802.11ax in the form of a thin PC that will be on display at its booth. As consumers demand for faster data speeds and larger data transfers grow, Intel's release of 5G compatible modems will be an integral part of technology growth in the coming years.

With some of the first 5G connected devices arriving on the market likely to be smartphones rather than PCs, Intel is also working to build its technology into phones, Rivera said.

Meanwhile, earlier this month Qualcomm announced partnerships with 19 mobile device makers and 18 carriers to bring Snapdragon X50 family 5G modems to devices sold across the world, starting in 2019. The company plans to make this possible using the same Intel XMM 8000 series modem along with Speadtrum's application processor, according to ZDNet.

The 2019 timeframe for the delivery of PCs with Intel's next-generation chips comes as little surprise, given that telecommunications standards organisation, 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), signed off on an accelerated roadmap past year that laid the groundwork for 5G deployments beginning in 2019. The company also plans to demonstrate "the industry's first 5G-ready base station", developed in collaboration with China Mobile, and an Intel-partnered "self-optimizing 5G network solution" at next week's MWC.
