Black Panther Does It Again And Now Approaches Billion Dollar Status

Marvel Disney

Only in its second weekend, Marvel's Black Panther is well on its way to hitting a gross of $1 billion after putting $704 million on the boards within its 12 days of running in theaters across the globe.

Unsurprisingly, those second-weekend numbers come with their own set of records.

Since the film's release earlier this month, Black Panther quickly became one of Marvel Studios' biggest success stories.

The Marvel blockbuster will also surpass $400 million (£286.4 million) in earnings in North America on Sunday (25Feb18), becoming the second-fastest movie to reach that mark behind Jurassic World. It is only the fourth film in history to bring in over $100 million during its second weekend.

Overall, "Black Panther" showed strong staying power losing only 47 percent of its domestic audience from its record-breaking opening weekend.

Part of the film's box office success can be contributed to its cultural significance as the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie with a black lead and a almost all-black cast, a topic that some of the film's stars have discussed in the past.

It is also the second fastest film in history to clock US$400 million at the USA box office, again behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Hispanics remain unchanged at 18 percent, followed by Asians (7 percent) and Native Americans/Other (5 percent). The movie, facing a strained marketplace for comedies, opened to a solid $17 million from 3,488 locations, earning the No. 2 spot for the weekend.

Coming in a distant second is Warner Bros. and New Line's Game Night, with about $16.6 million from 3,488 theaters. Kyle Chandler, Billy Magnussen, Sharon Horgan, Lamorne Morris, Kylie Bunbury, and Jesse Plemons also star in the movie, which was directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein based on a script from Mark Perez.

Annihilation opened in fourth place with $11 million. In two weeks the film has outgrossed every other Marvel movie except for the two Avengers films, and it's on pace to beat one of those by the end of next week. In Ryan Coogler's box-office smash, T'Chaka (who died in Captain America: Civil War) was seen in flashbacks wearing a more streamlined version of the suit similar to Chadwick Boseman's, but as per Park's images on Twitter, initially he proposed an option that was more decorative and comics-faithful.

"Fifty Shades Freed" took fifth place with $6.9 million.
