Turkey sends special forces for next stage of Afrin offensive

Kurdish Syrian ex-leader Salih Muslim arrested in Prague

Salih Muslim, former co-chair of the Democratic Union Party, or PYD, was detained in the Czech capital of Prague on Saturday based on a Turkish request for his arrest.

Ankara sees the YPG as an extension of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has been waging an insurgency in southeast Turkey for three decades - though the groups say they are independent.

Muslim was put on Turkey's most-wanted list earlier in February with a reward for $1 million.

Turkey sees the YPG and PYD as the Syrian branch of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which for over three decades has waged an insurgency against the Turkish state and is banned by Turkey, the U.S. and the European Union as a terror group.

About 600 Kurdish and Arab members of the Free Syrian Army's "Kurdish Falcons Brigade", also known as "red berets", will be deployed starting Monday, said brigade commander Hassan Abdullah Kulli, cited by Turkish news agency Anadolu. Interpol would not comment Monday on whether Turkey had sought such a notice and was denied.

He has been indicted over a February 2016 bombing in Ankara that targeted a convoy of shuttles at the military headquarters during the evening rush hour, killing 37 people. "A total of 845 people were detained", the statement said.

"The justice ministry has completed its preparations (for extradition) and this file has been sent to the Czech judicial authorities as of yesterday", Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag said.

On Jan. 20, Turkey launched an incursion into northern Syria, seeking to rout the US -backed Syrian Kurdish militia, known as the People's Protection Units or YPG, from the enclave of Afrin. The YPG, which controls several enclaves in northern Syria, including Afrin, secured the territories from Islamist rebels and other extremist groups over the course of the Syrian conflict with the US-led coalition's backing.
