ANC's Duarte Says South Africa 'Won't Be Another Zimbabwe' on Land

Mixed reaction to land expropriation push By PHATHU LUVHENGO

This came after the DA refused to support an EFF-sponsored motion that could end in a constitutional change to allow land expropriation without compensation.

"As the debate over expropriation without compensation continues, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema said on Wednesday that farmers should continue to work their land "uninterrupted", but that those parts that are lying idle must be redistributed by the state".

The resolution was eventually put to a vote, with 241 voting in favour of amending property clauses in the Constitution, while 83 voted against.

Parliament on Tuesday agreed to the EFF's motion to expropriate land without compensation.

In 2017, the government found out that 72 percent of the farmland in South Africa was owned by white farmers as compared to 85 percent after apartheid (a system that advocates for discrimination) ended in 1994 and democracy took over.

Cyril Ramaphosa, who was elected party leader in December and the nation's president February 15, affirmed the ANC's decision to seize land without compensation to speed up land reform, but said it would only be done in a responsible manner that didn't harm the economy, agricultural production or food security.

The national assembly, in concurrence with its upper house, instructed its constitutional review committee to review the constitution in line with the successful motion and report back to it by 30 August 2018. "We must ensure that we restore the dignity of our people without compensating the criminals who stole our land".

Mbalula said: "Radical economic transformation means, among others, speeding up land reform".

Magashule's deputy, Jessie Duarte, said that it was "absolute nonsense" to say that South Africa was going the route of Zimbabwe on managing land reform.

But leader of the opposing Freedom Front Plus party Pieter Groenewald warned the motion could have consequences.

But the DA, African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), Congress of the People (Cope) acknowledged South Africa's painful and chose rather to reject expropriation without compensation as the correct mechanism to address it. "Expropriation without compensation is theft".

She said it was used to divert attention away from the ANC's failures with land reform, and was a "lie peddled by the ANC, who fears being outflanked on the left by the EFF".

Political analyst Professor Somadoda Fikeni said the ANC was likely to "substantially" support the EFF's idea. "If you don't want it, you must go back to government and say I am leaving this place and you can take that which belongs to you and the government will reallocate it to someone else", he said.

Malema claimed that huge portions of land now under white ownership, was standing fallow and farmers were keeping it just to "brag" about the hectares they own.
