Russian Federation calls off strategic talks with US

Putin boasts of nuclear-powered cruise missile that can penetrate US shields

Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said the Defense Department isn't surprised by Russian President Vladimir Putin's claims of new nuclear weapons, adding that the USA military is prepared to defend the nation.

Pentagon spokeswoman Dana W. White said the U.S. would stick to its insistence that United States missile defences are not a threat to Russian Federation.

Speaking in a state-of-the-nation speech, Putin said the weapons include a nuclear-powered cruise missile, a nuclear-powered underwater drone and new hypersonic missile.

Kelly's interview arrives as Putin rattled a sabre about Russia's nuclear capabilities, warning the West that his country's new intercontinental ballistic missile can evade any sort of detection and strike anywhere.

Russia's development of new weapons was nothing but a response to the USA withdrawal from the ABM treaty, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Friday.

Michaela Dodge, a Heritage Foundation missile defence expert, said Putin's statements confirmed that the Trump Administration was right to build its recent review of nuclear weapons policy around concerns about Russian Federation.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders reiterated the theme, pointing to America's massive military budget, as well as US President Donald Trump's own nuclear doctrine. Worth keeping this grain of salt in mind when Putin goes shooting his mouth off about all the fancy new weapons he has.

Dismissing it as a "cheesy video", State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said, "we don't think it's responsible".

"My guess is they're not bluffing, that they've flight-tested this thing". "I should specifically say that Russia's growing military strength is not a threat to anyone; we have never had any plans to use this potential for offensive - let alone aggressive - goals".

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu later said Russian arms would be able to "overcome all existing antimissile systems" such as those the United States intends to deploy in eastern Europe and South Korea.

His remarks were greeted with scepticism in Washington, where officials cast doubt on whether Russian Federation has added any new capabilities to its nuclear arsenal beyond those already known to the US military and intelligence agencies.

Professor Mark Edele, from the University of Melbourne's School of Historical and Philosophical Studies, said much of Mr Putin's show of strength was about the March 18 elections.

Sending lethal weapons to Ukraine also creates the troubling possibility that American arms could kill Russian soldiers, a situation that could thrust the two nuclear-armed nations closer to direct confrontation.

The Trump administration accused Moscow anew of violating a Cold War-era treaty which banned nuclear and conventional ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles with a range of 500-5,500 km (300-3,400 miles).

Putin's address comes ahead of the country's March 18 presidential election, and experts said that it was probably aimed more at a domestic audience than meant to be an global provocation.

"Russia is not going to be pulled into any arms race".
