The US launched a rocket Atlas V with a meteorological satellite

The newest satellite GOES-S, developed by Lockheed Martin will enter into the constellation of satellites created to observe atmospheric phenomena in the Western hemisphere.

Lockheed Martin built the spacecraft and is responsible for spacecraft development, integration and testing.

Besides the West Coast, Alaska and Hawaii, GOES-S also will keep watch over Mexico and Central America.

United Launch Alliance successfully sent the second next generation GOES satellite to a geostationary transfer orbit on behalf of NASA and NOAA on Thursday, March 1, 2018.

The launch of the new satellite will be streamed on the FOX31 and Channel 2 Facebook pages. This is the 18th launch of a GOES since 1975; one was lost in an explosion during liftoff and all but three of the satellites already up there are retired.

NASA said the satellites in GOES (Geostationary Operation Environmental Satellites) are used to improve detection and obstruction of environmental events.

Together, the new satellites represent "a quantum leap" above previous space-based weather stations, forecasters say. GOES-16 also observed the uncertain path of Hurricanes Irma and the rapidly intensifying Hurricane Maria in September.

Once the satellite becomes active later this year, it will read weather, wildfires, fog, storms, cyclones, and every other natural calamity that might hit the Western United States.

The satellite will be able to scan each spot below it every 5 minutes, or every 1 minute to 30 seconds on special focus areas - in the latter case, for developing weather events.

At the news conference and at another one held earlier on February 27, NOAA and NASA researchers shared stories of how GOES-East's remarkably clear views have aided in search-and-rescue operations as well as in forecasting. It is expected that the satellite will receive more accurate information on storm disasters such as storms, hurricanes, floods.

"The new satellite will augment observations over the Pacific Ocean and around mountain ranges where radar coverage is limited or blocked", said Joe Pica, a National Weather Service manager.

OnceGOES-Sis positioned in a geostationary orbit 22,300 miles above Earth, in approximately two weeks, it will be renamed GOES-17. Several other nations share weather satellite data with each other and NOAA to provide more complete coverage.

The four-satellite GOES-R program has a total budget of $10.8 billion through its entire life cycle.

Two more are scheduled for launch in the coming years: GOES-T in 2020 and GOES-U 2024.
