Wenger's nightmare continues as Arsenal lose away to Brighton

German centre back Shkodran Mustafi was embarrassed by Manchester City's Leroy Sane

Arsene Wenger conceded that Arsenal were now out of the running for a Champions League place after they were defeated 2-1 by Brighton at the Amex stadium.

Seven minutes into the first half, Brighton broke the deadlock when Shane Duffy's header across the face of goal was turned home by Lewis Dunk.

Since then, however, Mkhitaryan has not registered another assist in the Premier League, and has created just four chances in three league games as Arsenal slipped to 13 points behind the top four in sixth place.

They have also now gone 11 Premier League games without a clean sheet, which is their joint-longest such run in the competition, the last coming to an end 16 years ago.

Arsenal found it hard to fight back, keeping the bulk of play in Brighton's end but not managing to get off many shots.

Rio Ferdinand has said that it is time for Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to know when enough is enough and to quit the club.

The veteran French boss surprised a few people with his matchday squad, with Hector Bellerin and Danny Welbeck only on the bench and Aaron Ramsey left out of the 18-man squad entirely. His team might have salvaged a point here after a second half they dominated but instead, they lost for the fourth time in a row and deserved little more after an error-strewn first half in which they could have been far more than 2-0 down.

Instead, Arsenal betrayed the defensive frailties that have been a feature of their campaign and allowed Brighton to take control.

That's the opinion of Rio Ferdinand anyway, who dropped nothing short of a truth bomb on Arsenal during the Brighton game. His cross was met by Murray in the six-yard box and the ball squeezed beneath the body of Cech to prompt some "Wenger out" chants in the away end. Arsenal's entire defence looked shaky whenever pressed, Koscielny's contribution to the second goal proving a case in point.

The former Borussia Dortmund striker reacted well to turn home Granit Xhaka's drilled pass in the 43rd minute and Arsenal might have been level had Laurent Koscielny not headed against the post in first-half added-time.

DF Sead Kolasinac, 5 - Was fortunate not to see red when, on a yellow, he smashed into Ezequiel Schelotto when trying to challenge for the ball.
