Manchester United's Scott McTominay finally decides on his global future

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay told to focus on club football amid England and Scotland uncertainty

Joey Barton has joked that Scott McTominay chose to represent Scotland over England because he "clearly wants summers off".

The 21-year-old was born in Lancaster but his father hails from Helensburgh, north-west of Glasgow.

You can always rely on Barton for a controversial reaction to a football story; however, there might be England fans out there nodding along with the former Manchester City and Newcastle United star.

"I don't know him but I think he'd have had a great chance of being in an England squad and being involved in a World Cup". He's a great guy, and he gets the best out of players.

McTominay, who has been associated with United since he was five, signed a new contract in October that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2021.

The fast rising star is expected to be named in Scotland's squad for the games against Costa Rica and Hungary this month.

"I know you don't really sign players for the global team but England were interested in him, and it's fantastic he's chosen to play for Scotland".

"We have to realise he's a young lad, he's playing for Manchester United and he's going to have a great future, but at the same time it's a totally different game playing for Scotland". "I can't confirm because I have no information about that and my advice to him is not about national teams, is not about that".

The Irish Times cited a September 2016 interview with the club website, in which Scott McTominay said that he felt more Scottish than English.

He said: "Because it looks like England are missing him, if I was Alex McLeish, the first thing I would do would be to come to me".
