Britain's Katarina Johnson-Thompson wins pentathlon gold at World Indoor Championships

Six months after heptathlon frustration in front of a different "home" crowd at the World Championships in London, the British athlete finally came good on home soil in the IAAF World Indoor Championships pentathlon.

"But it's sort of not giving up after one throw and knowing I can get better". The final three events are on Saturday. "It's not my personal best but hopefully it can be the start of something".

The UCD athlete, a bronze medal victor over 1,500 at the European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam in 2016, stated: "I'm disappointed but I know I'm running better than that". They were here for every event - I still can't believe it. I feel everyone can have good and bad days and that means they are beatable. "I'm really looking forward to what 2018 holds".

Johnson-Thompson came into the arena in second place, 13 points off Cuba's Yorgelis Rodriguez. "I wanted my family to see me achieve something".

Liverpool Harrier Johnson-Thompson has not won a major medal since claiming pentathlon gold at the European Indoor Championships in 2015.

Johnson-Thompson moved into first place with a leap of 6.50 meters to top the long-jump standings, which afforded her a lead of around two seconds going into the 800. Lindsay Lindley placed fifth in the second semifinal of the women's 60m hurdles in 8.08secs. She edged teammate Marie Josee Ta Lou by 0.43.

If the talent isn't there, no amount of willpower will conjure up a run to rival the world's best, and we saw once again how at this level any slight under-performance is amplified.

"After the last couple of years I have had, there was no pressure on me because I have not done too well". I knew he was watching from up there. The truth is that while India could probably have as much talent as the USA and rake in the gold medals, unless there is proper support from the authorities to the athletes, that could be all just a pipe dream.

"Emotionally I am at a loss of words".

Mujinga Kambundji of Switzerland was third, just 0.005 behind Ta Lou.

World champion Lijiao Gong of China was third. There were a lot of disqualifications over the 400-metre race.

The reigning men's outdoor world pole vault champion, who won Olympic bronze in 2016, repeated as the world indoor silver medalist by clearing the bar at 5.85. Bralon Taplin of Grenada, who ran the fastest time this year, won the heat but officials disqualified him and Steven Gayle of Jamaica, Austris Karpinskis of Latvia, and Alonzo Russell of the Bahamas for running out of their lanes. Maslak finished second in his heat and first in his semifinal.
