More snow on the way

The same risks of power outages and downed trees are possible with this storm due to the high winds and the possibility of wet and heavy snow.

The timing of the storm will make travel "very hard to impossible", including during the evening commute on Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

The storm warning is in effect until 6 a.m. on Tuesday. Strong northeasterly winds will continue to kick up large waves through Tuesday with coastal flooding and erosion likely along the south shore of Nova Scotia. We are likely again to see some windy conditions, rain and eventually snow as well before the system exits the area. At it moves east, however, the storm center will weaken and send its energy to a new storm system that will form over the Atlantic Ocean and grow stronger as it moves northeast. As the storm matures, a band of heavy snow will develop and press into northern and perhaps central New Jersey. It could be as far west as the New Jersey/Pennsylvania border, or as far east as western Long Island.

There is potential for heavy snowfall of 5-8 inches in the Philadelphia area. It should begin as rain everywhere, with temperatures still in the 40s. The early morning commute will likely have falling snow, gusty winds and temps near 31.

Today will be gorgeous with sunshine, less wind than yesterday and seasonable - highs in the 40s.... Lows tomorrow night will be in the upper 20s and lower 30s. While timing and the change from rain to snow is what we have the best handle on right now, areas of lower confidence are in how much precipitation we receive, mainly how much snow we will get, and the exact track that this storm will take.

"We're leaning to a 2-4" accumulation by Tuesday morning.

"Widespread accumulation snowfall across the interior, with amounts near 12-16" of snow could fall.

The eastern part of PPL's service area was the most severely impacted and contains the majority of the remaining outages.

In short, expect both rain and snow to fall.

A graphic tweeted by the Weather Service Monday afternoon showed the highest amounts of snow to the west and north.

"Any time it's around the freezing point and snowing this time of year, it's a wet snow", he said.
