Nashville Mayor Megan Barry Pleads Guilty to Theft and Agrees to Resign

Nashville mayor who admitted affair with bodyguard expected to resign

Nashville Mayor Megan Barry has begun calling close advisers to inform them of her decision, the Tennessean reported, citing multiple sources.

According to The Tennessean, the two were often partaking in domestic and global travel for work, which led Forrest to rack up $33,000 in expenses and $50,000 plus in overtime in 2017 on top of his $84,500 salary.

Ms. Barry, 54, a former corporate ethics and compliance officer, was known for her outspoken support of abortion rights and same-sex marriage.

Her plea deal requires Barry to serve three years of probation and repay the city $11,000.

For much of her time in office, Forrest, who lead the mayor's police security detail, was a regular presence with Barry during out-of-town city trips.

Barry, who is married, has said the affair with Forrest is over.

"Today I acknowledged publicly that I have engaged in an extramarital affair with the former head of my security detail", Barry said in a January 31 statement.

Barry's exit comes after she admitted January 31 to a almost two-year affair with Forrest, who retired that same day.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said Forrest used a work phone to take two photos while on duty.

If Barry had gone to trial and been found guilty, she could have been sentenced between three to 15 years in prison. The city's information technology system, however, continued to show Anderson as the approving authority until February 9 of this year, when a report on the issue by NewsChannel 5 prompted Metro Nashville's Director of Information Technology Systems to describe the error as "a computer glitch". It was filed in the Criminal Court Clerk's office, and Barry's attorney said he provided the pass code to the mayor's personal cellphone to investigators days later. Barry is expected to resign and Vice Mayor David Briley (D.) will be sworn in later in the afternoon. The two photos were taken a day apart, the affidavit states. Barry also allegedly deleted text messages between her and Forrest.

Forrest resigned from the Metro Nashville Police Department after Barry's admission.

A favorite of Nashville progressives, Barry overcame a sizable fundraising advantage against six opponents to make the mayoral runoff in September 2015, where she defeated Fox.
