SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket puts Spanish satellite into orbit

The payload, the Hispasat 30W-6 will be launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

The rocket lifted off at 00:33 Eastern Standard Time (GMT 0533) at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in the southern eastern US state of Florida, with a payload "at 6 metric tons and nearly the size of a city bus", said Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX.

The satellite aims to expand television, broadband and telecommunications service in Europe and Northwest Africa. This doesn't include the recent test flight of the Falcon Heavy, which is basically three Falcon 9 rockets.

If the rocket is reusable, it's a moot point now - SpaceX made no attempt to land the rocket, due to forecasted choppy weather in the Atlantic, according to a press release.

The Falcon 9 achieved 50 successful launches more than four years faster than United Launch Alliance's Atlas V, which debuted in 2002 and has been the USA government's workhorse for national security and high-value science payloads. The CRS-1 mission was a partial failure because one of the rocket's engines lost power and prevented a secondary satellite payload from reaching orbit.

Since landing the first Falcon 9 booster in late 2015, SpaceX has attained a 79 percent success rate at landing on both sea and land. In that duration, the Falcon 9 placed the Spanish satellite in GTO at an altitude of around 37,000 km above the Earth.

SpaceX will try once again to launch a Spanish satellite into space from Florida early Tuesday morning.

Hispasat 30W-6 has 40 Ku-band transponders, up to 6 Ka-band beams and 10 C-band transponders. The Madrid-based company Hispasat owns it. Also, this one marks 2018's fifth launch for SpaceX and four of them were using Falcon 9 rockets.

SpaceX delayed the Falcon 9 launch two weekends ago to perform further testing on the rocket, the company said in a tweet.
