Attorney General Jeff Sessions has railed against

Earlier, Sessions said the Justice Department sued California because state laws are preventing federal immigration agents from doing their jobs.

The California Peace Officers Association said the conflicting rules are creating confusion for police on the street and are now looking for Sessions to clarify those issues.

The lawsuit alleges the three laws enacted past year are "a deliberate effort by California to obstruct the United States' enforcement of federal immigration law".

Re Justice Department sues California over "sanctuary" laws that aid those in US illegally (March 7): This is the tyranny that the Founding Fathers feared. The lawsuit is the latest salvo in an escalating feud between the Trump administration and California, which has resisted the president on issues from taxes to marijuana policy and defiantly refuses to help federal agents detain and deport immigrants.

"This is really unprecedented for the chief law enforcement officer of the United States to come out to California and act more like Fox News than a law enforcement officer".

The U.S. Supreme Court reinforced the federal government's primacy in enforcing immigration law when it blocked much of Arizona's tough 2010 immigration law on similar grounds. Sessions has called it "unconscionable". Rather than effectively force millions of hardworking immigrant families to go underground, the state imposes some very basic and modest limitations on the circumstances in which it gives ICE the run of the place. "Our track record so far when it comes to any dispute with the federal government has been pretty good", Becerra said. It was carried by state Senate leader Kevin de León, a candidate for U.S. Senate, who has led the anti-Trump resistance in the Legislature. Of those arrested, 180 were either convicted criminals, had been issued a final order of removal and failed to depart the US, or had been previously removed from the United States and returned, said the agency.

"Here's my message - how dare you".

He says his department is simply asking California to allow ICE agents to do their job.

The lawsuit is also of note because it is the first to place a state against the Justice Department and the DOJ's ongoing behavior in regards to immigration. "It's not wise, it's not right and it will not stand".

"There is no nullification; there is no secession", Sessions said.

State Sen. Steve Glazer, a Democrat from the San Francisco Bay Area who voted for the three bills being challenged by Sessions, told Courthouse News the visit was a "poke in the eye" with all the makings of a political stunt.

In the time since Donald Trump won the presidential election, there has been an increasing amount of tension between lawmakers in Washington DC and lawmakers in California. "In California, we don't confuse coercion with cooperation". Jerry Brown and California Attorney General Xavier Becerra in federal court. He claims 800 "wanted criminals" eluded arrests as a result.
