Paul Manafort gets a trial date

Paul Manafort pleads not guilty in Virginia court trial date set for July

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges of bank and tax fraud in special prosecutor Robert Mueller's sprawling Russian Federation meddling probe.

Manafort and Gates worked for Viktor Yanukovych, the pro-Russian former Ukrainian president who was attempting to burnish his image in the USA and Europe.

All charges, which Manafort has denied in both courts, were levied during the ongoing Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential elections and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.

U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis, based in Alexandria, Virginia has set a tentative trial date for July 10.

The mystery man sported a full white beard, black beanie hat and sunglasses as he extended his hands upward while Manafort arrived at the Albert V. Bryan Courthouse in Virginia.

In a separate development Thursday, another former Trump campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, met with the House Intelligence Committee for a second time as part of the panel's Russian Federation investigation.

This will be the first of two trials for Manafort this year. At the request of prosecutors, charges have been dropped against Gates in Virginia, though they could be resurrected should he fail to live up to a plea agreement, which requires him to offer information on any matters Mueller deems relevant. The hearing is set for 1 p.m.

Manafort's longtime business partner, Rick Gates, is among three former Trump aides who have pleaded guilty to assortment of charges and have agreed to cooperate with Mueller's team of prosecutors.

Mr. Mueller alleges Mr. Manafort shielded from the IRS millions of dollars he earned as a consultant and lobbyist for the Ukrainian government.

Prosecutors told said in court they planned to call 20-25 witnesses and said their arguments could last up to two weeks.

Gates who was a Trump campaign aide, pleaded guilty on February 23 for lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and for conspiracy to defraud the U.S. He faces up to 15 years on the charges of filing false tax returns and up to 20 years on the charges of failing to report foreign bank accounts.

"The new allegations against Mr. Manafort, once again, have nothing to do with Russian Federation and 2016 election interference/collusion", the statement said.
