'Personal insults' behind Warner-De Kock row

South Africa wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock

It comes after footage was leaked of Warner being restrained by teammates as he yelled at de Kock in the stairwell after tea earlier this week.

Australian vice-captain David Warner confronts South Africa's Quinton de Kock at Kingsmead.

The ICC said De Kock, also reported following the incident, has yet to respond to his level one charge but Australian media have reported he will contest it.

Match referee Jeff Crowe charged Warner with a Level 2 offence and De Kock for a Level 1 offence for "conduct that brings the game into disrepute" on March 6.

Reports had claimed that the spat started with the Australian vice-captain celebrating the run-out of AB de Villiers on day 4 of the first Test.

The video shows Warner walk past de Kock and say, "You "f--ing sook. have a look at you, you sook".

"(It was) something inappropriate. when you are bringing people's families or wives into it, it's unacceptable", Paine told reporters in Port Elizabeth.

The Proteas are understood to be disappointed that Warner didn't receive a level-three charge from the ICC, something that would have ruled him out of the second Test in Port Elizabeth. The deadline for de Kock to get back with an explanation is Wednesday. "As I went past de Kock he said what he said, and luckily I suppose I was there in between".

De Kock, meanwhile, has chose to contest his level one charge after South Africa sought clarity over the accusations laid against him.

"We are appealing level one because we think Quinny didn't do anything", coach Ottis Gibson said on Wednesday.

"Gilly - Warner crossed many personal boundaries with the South Africans, so we can't be surprised when there is eventually a reaction", he said. Certainly it's hard, and we like to make them feel uncomfortable out there.

"When he gets the bit between the teeth he is one of the best cricketers in the world".
