Carolina Panthers trade for veteran receiver with history of big plays, drops

BREAKING: Eagles trade Torrey Smith for CB Daryl Worley

The Eagles are now projected to be about $14 million over the National Football League salary cap of $177.2 million and need to reach that figure on Wednesday.

Philadelphia has agreed to trade veteran wide receiver Torrey Smith to the Panthers in exchange for third-year cornerback Daryl Worley, according to a report by ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The trade reached on Friday won't be officially announced until the NFL's league year opens next Wednesday. "Smith scheduled to make $5 million this season".

Smith, 29, had an inconsistent season for the Eagles. It will be a homecoming of sorts for Worley, as he is a graduate of Philadelphia's Penn Charter High School, the same school that Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan went to.

As for Smith, he was a key player for the Eagles in their Super Bowl run after a lackluster regular season (36 receptions for 430 yards and two touchdowns).

The 6-foot, 209-pounder stepped up his game in the playoffs, however, catching 13 passes for 157 yards and a TD.

The Philadelphia Eagles could not have asked for a better result in 2017, but they did let up a whopping 33 points in their Super Bowl win over the New England Patriots. He also has some ties with the Eagles, having played at West Virginia University with Eagles wide receiver Shelton Gibson and running back Wendell Smallwood.

Lining up primarily on the outside, Worley had two interceptions and 10 pass breakups last season.

Worley will join fellow corners Sidney Jones, Ronald Darby, and Jalen Mills fighting for playing time.
