Pentagon memo details plans for Trump's military parade

President Donald Trump speaks at the Latino Coalition Legislative Summit Wednesday

The United States Department of Defense is all set to fulfill President Donald Trump's dream of carrying out a military parade in Washington D.C. The route will be from the White House to the U.S. Capitol Building.

The memo said military aircraft will also fly overhead at the end of the parade. Officials said they are anxious about the possible damage that non-wheeled vehicles could infict upon Washington streets. However, due to the millions of dollars it would cost and the potential damage it could cause the streets of Washington D.C., tanks will not be used in the parade like the Paris Bastille Day parade that inspired Trump in the first place.

"This parade will focus on the contributions of our Veterans throughout the history of the U.S. Military, starting from the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 to today, with an emphasis on the price of freedom", Executive Secretary Hallock Mohler Jr. wrote in a memo to the Joint Chiefs of Staff obtained by NPR.

The memo said the parade will focus on the contributions of US veterans from the Revolutionary War up to the current wars, emphasizing "the price of freedom".

Trump was apparently inspired to throw a military parade after attending France's Bastille Day celebration in France previous year.

Trump was delighted by France's Bastille Day celebration during a visit to Paris last July, and praised the parade months later, saying, "We're going to have to try and top it".

As planning continues, the memo gave no more details on the type of weaponry to be featured in the parade.

The Joint Staff will reportedly oversee the planning of the procession, while Northern Command, which oversees USA troops in North America, will carry it out.

The plan is for the parade to begin at the White House and end at the Capitol, CNN reported.

Trump praised the French display months later when he and Macron met in NY, saying: "We're going to have to try and top it". A week later Mick Mulvaney, the White House budget director, estimated that the sort of public display that Trump had called for could cost between US$10 million (S$13 million) and $30 million.
