Richard Sherman visits 49ers on day of Seahawks release

Richard Sherman said Friday that he had been released by the Seahawks

Sherman reportedly will visit the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday, in what will be the first - and potential last stop - on his search for a new home.

The talented, brash defender has been one of the faces of a team that appeared in two Super Bowls and won one, success built on a hard-hitting defensive identity and the vaunted "Legion of Boom" secondary.

Four of Sherman's interceptions have come against the 49ers, and he was a headliner of a vaunted defense that's keyed Seattle's nine-game winning streak over their NFC West foes. The days of an Achilles tear being an immediate career-ender are long past, but for a cornerback who never had outstanding deep speed-and is less than three weeks from his 30th birthday-it's hard to think he'll be back to top form before the season starts. In something that might resemble a worst-nightmare for fans of the #Seattle Seahawks, Sherman might be open to joining one of their rivals. After he was cut on Friday, the former Seahawks corner, who turns 30 on March 30, shared some statistics to prove that he's not "slowin' down".

"I plan on playing five or six more years whether it's here or elsewhere", Sherman said. The intent of this meeting is for the team to find out the state of Sherman's injuries and if he can provide the team with some value under a new contract.

Will Richard Sherman's foray into free agency be brief? He is expected to have his first free agent meeting with the 49ers. The move was to save a lot of money and get the team under the salary cap.

Sherman was an overlooked fifth-round draft pick who went on to become a two-time All-Pro who helped anchor a defence that was the league's best for several years.
