Pilot dies, death toll from US-Bangla crash rises to 50

Kathmandu Airport Nepal

Among the passengers were 33 Nepali nationals, 32 Bangladeshis, one Chinese national and one Maldivian national, CAAN Tribhuvan International Airport Office said at a press conference this evening.

Monday's crash was the deadliest since a Pakistan International Airlines plane crashed in 1992, killing all 167 on board. In a recording posted by air traffic monitoring website liveatc.net, the pilot asked for permission to land from the north, which an air traffic controller granted.

Mr Bohora, an employee of Raswita International Travels and Tours, recalled that take-off was normal from Dhaka but when the plane approached the Tribhuvan International Airport for landing in Kathmandu, the aircraft shook unusually.

"It is yet to be identified whether the pilot or air traffic control was wrong", he said, adding the investigation would be carried out with Bangladesh. "The airplane was not properly aligned with the runway", Chettri said. "The tower repeatedly asked if the pilot was OK and the reply was 'yes,"' said Raj Kumar Chetri, the airport's general manager.

Moments later, the controller comes back on, using a panicked tone rarely heard in such conversations, and tells the pilot, "I say again, turn!"

Condolences have poured in for the victims and families of the US-Bangla plane crash in the land of Everest that killed dozens of passengers and injured many.

Bangladesh cricket team skipper Mahmudullah said the players will wear black armbands in their Nidahas Trophy 2018 match against India at the R Premadasa stadium on Wednesday as a mark of respect to the 49 passengers who died in the plane crash in Nepal on Monday.

Captain Abid Sultan had landed more than 100 times at Kathmandu and had more than 5,000 hours of flying experience. There is silence for a while, then a "Fire One" calls the tower, indicating that a crash has occurred and the airport fire tender has been activated.

He said it landed just off the runway, broke apart and burst into flames. "We don't know how it got out", said Gautam, the director general of the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal.

However, airport authorities claimed that the pilot had ignored the control tower's instructions and approached the runway from the wrong direction.

The plane was then seen circling twice in a northeast direction, Chettri said. Canadian plane maker Bombardier said it was sending an air safety investigator to the site, as well as a field service representative.
