Apple's senior vice president of internet software and services, Eddy Cue, revealed the information at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. There are easily two billion people in the world who can afford to pay for some level of music, yet Spotify and Apple Music combined have only around 100 million subscribers globally. Meantime, it has taken 5 months for Apple Music to gain 8 million subscribers.

Spotify has officially launched in South Africa, offering brands a new platform to connect with local consumers in an exciting, targeted and impactful manner. At the beginning of this year, Spotify reached 70 million paying customers. Apple and Google charge $9.99 per month for their respective services, while Amazon offers theirs for $7.99 to Prime members. Google does not release paid subscriber numbers for its service, Google Play Music. And with Spotify's 159 million free listeners who also listen to ads, it's clear that this new concept of radio may have a long ways to go before saturation.

In addition to paid subscribers, Apple also lays claim to 8 million users that are now in a three-month free trial period. Texture hasn't specified how many subscribers it has, but CEO John Loughlin said in a 2016 interview that the number ranged in the "hundreds of thousands".

Spotify uses 10.8MB of data per hour while streaming music, compared to 43.2MB per hour that is the lowest reported data-consumption rate available on other music streaming services, according to Android Central.

Apple also has curated playlists, but it doesn't continually update based on your music preferences like Spotify.
