After Cynthia Nixon announced that she's throwing her hat into the ring in the NY governor's race, Twitter celebrated (and bemoaned) the news.

"New York is where I was raised, and where I'm raising my kids", Nixon says in voice over. The New York Times reported earlier in the month that she was hiring political consultants ahead of a challenge to the beleaguered Cuomo. "How did we let this happen?" said Nixon, who starred in the TV show "Sex and the City".

Nixon's looming candidacy has unnerved some supporters of Cuomo.

He's also a Democrat, so she would potentially be challenging him in the primary in September. "Governor Cuomo has delivered more real progressive wins than any other Democrat in the country, including passing marriage equality, the strongest gun safety law in the nation, a $15 minimum wage, free college tuition, paid family leave, record setting funding for public education, expanding and protecting healthcare for our most vulnerable, and banning fracking". Two strategists with ties to de Blasio have joined Nixon's campaign, and Nixon's wife recently left her job as an education adviser in the mayor's administration. "I'm not nervous about whoever runs", Cuomo said on March 14, per the New York Times.

"She's a danger and Cuomo knows it, " Muzzio said of Nixon.

After weeks of hinting that she would seek the Democratic nomination for governor of New York, Cynthia Nixon has made it official.

The lifelong New Yorker has been politically active in recent years.

"I've never lived anywhere else", Nixon says in the video.

With the lines between Hollywood and Washington permanently blurred, Cynthia Nixon is the latest celebrity to announce plans to run for office.

The actress is a longtime ally of the New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. She declares herself to be "a proud public school graduate and a proud public school parent".

But Teachout's run in 2014 highlighted a division among some liberal leaders and activists on Cuomo, who has been criticized for not doing more to unseat Republicans from power in the closely divided state Senate.
