Delete Facebook: WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton's message to netizens

WhatsApp

Brian Acton, co-founder of WhatsApp, speaks at the WSJD Live conference.

Brian Acton sold WhatsApp to Facebook for a whopping $19 billion dollars and had been working with Facebook since the last September 2017.

The WhatsApp cofounder left the company six months ago, four years after Facebook acquired WhatsApp for $19 billion (the acquisition netted Acton as much as $3 billion from the deal).

The twitter hashtag #deletefacebook had been trending when the pandora box related to Facebook users' data breach opened. Acton's tweet of #DeleteFacebook does not come at a good time for the company, and will further raise questions about the social network and its policies.

Cambridge Analytica accessed the private data of 50 million Facebook users without their permission. It is still not clear as to why Acton has asked to delete Facebook.

Cambridge Analytica got that data from the creator of a quiz taken by 270,000 Facebook users. "Consumers have a right to know how their information is used - and companies like Facebook have a fundamental responsibility to protect their users' personal information", wrote NY attorney general Eric T. Schneiderman.

According to The Verge, Brian Acton has taken to his Twitter account and is urging his followers that it's high time that they deleted their Facebook account.

Facebook said University of Cambridge psychologist Aleksandr Kogan, who developed the app used to harvest user data, also agreed to cooperate.

Sandy told Guadian that Facebook did not use its enforcement mechanisms or audit external developers to ensure data was not being misused.

Facebook communications statement has been issued which says, "The claim that this is a data breach is completely false".
