The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made significant gains after the conclusion of the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha on Friday.

Party MLA from Purwa, Anil Kumar Singh, announced his support for the BJP candidate.

Out of the 58 vacancies across 16 states, 33 candidates from 10 states had already been elected unanimously. The BJP used its extra 28 votes to tilt the balance while one BJP ally is said to have gone against the NDA its clear that more from the SP-BSP combine switched loyalties. If their understanding - still very fragile - holds, the BJP could lose a colossal amount of ground in UP where it won a sumptuous 72 of 80 seats in 2014.

Earlier, after receiving the winning certificate, a huge rally of party workers led newly elected Rajya Sabha Member Saroj Pandey to BJP state headquarters, where she participated in celebrations along with them.

The cross-border implications of yesterday's Rajya Sabha contest are immediate. With a total tally of 43 legislators, BJP forced the elections after it named a second candidate despite being aware of 27 votes needed to win one seat.
