Karnataka Assembly Elections dates announced; Find out polling date and other details

The big news BJP and Congress accuse each other of data theft and nine other top stories

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) information technology head Amit Malviya, on March 27, landed himself in controversy by tweeting the dates for Karnataka Assembly elections 2018, even before the Election Commission of India (ECI).

In a letter to the EC, Malviya said an English news channel had reported the poll date at 11:06 am and he tweeted about it at 11:08 am.

Karnataka, where the Congress and the BJP are set to clash for major sweepstakes ahead of the next year Lok Sabha polls, will vote on May 12 in a single-phased poll to elect its new assembly.

Rawat further informed counting of votes and results will be announced on 15 May.

When Rawats attention was drawn towards the tweet, he described it as a "very serious issue" that would merit a probe and "stringent action".

"Strict legal and administrative action will be taken on the leak of information", Rawat said. The Election Commission also said that the counting would be held on May 15.

The press conference was interrupted when reporters asked the questions on how the dates were announced on social media prior to its announcement.

The Karnataka elections will be held on May 12.

Malviya who actually got the dates wrong, deleted his tweet within minutes.

The Election Commission on Tuesday constituted a committee of senior officials to look into the alleged leak of the schedule of upcoming assembly elections in Karnataka even before it was announced by the poll watchdog. At present, Karnataka is the only major state where the Congress is in power.

Shah corrected himself, went on a damage control and said he meant that Congress government of Chief Minister "Siddaramaiah would come first in a competition for the most corrupt government".

Karnataka is now ruled by Congress Party and it holds majority of 123 seats in the 224 constituencies. The credibility of the EC is at test, " he said.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi and BJP national chief Amit Shah have already kicked off campaigning in Karnataka's battleground constituencies.
