France terror attack: Hero policeman married hours before he died

Suspect in deadly hostage-taking in French supermarket is killed by police

Lakdim, who was initially believed to have acted alone, held up a vehicle, fired on police and seized hostages in a supermarket on Friday, in what President Emmanuel Macron called an act of "Islamist terrorism".

Arnaud was killed on Friday during a shooting spree and hostage-taking around the towns of Carcassonne and Trebes by Radouane Lakdim, a Moroccan-born French national, that left four people dead and three injured.

An image Lieutenant-Colonel Arnaud Beltrame is attached to a bouquet of flower laid outside the gates of the gendarmerie of Carcassonne where he worked in southwest France, March 25, 2018.

"He had been on a watch list for his radicalisation and links to the Salafist movement", Molins told reporters in Carcassonne on Friday, adding that Lakdim had been tracked for his online contacts with extremists.

Two more were later confirmed dead by the police. He was killed after responding police officers - guided by Beltrame's phone, which he left open so that he could be tracked - stormed the supermarket and shot him.

The Grand Mosque of Paris, the largest in the country, said the Muslim community joined in mourning for a man who had "fallen heroically under the bullets of the terrorist Redouane Lakdim in the exercise of his mission".

On March 24, the Paris prosecutors' office said police had detained a 17-year-old in connection with the investigation.

The officer's brother, Cedric, said he had given his life "for strangers" and knew he had "almost no chance" of surviving.

Based on the findings of the first police investigations, Le Monde reports that the series of events started on Friday when Lakdim attacked an Opel Corsay labeled white auto with two people inside.

Daesh claimed the attack late on Friday, saying that the lone gunman was operating under their command.

A gun-wielding extremist unleashed bloodshed in a quiet corner of southern France on Friday, killing three people as he hijacked a auto, opened fire on police and took hostages in a supermarket, where panicked shoppers hid in a meat freezer or ran through the aisles.

An official with the police union told The Associated Press that the suspect was shot to death when police raided the market in the town of Trebes.

It was the worst jihadi attack under Emmanuel Macron's presidency.

Lawmakers at the National Assembly in Paris observed a minute of silence Tuesday for the four people who died in Friday's attack. Macron said security services were checking that claim. He then fired on a group of gendarmes jogging outside their barracks before seizing hostages at the supermarket in nearby Trebes.

Around 20 shoppers and staff reportedly escaped from the grocery store after running for their lives, though it was uncertain how many hostages were taken during a standoff with police.

"I said to the girls, 'Call the police, there's a terrorist in the shop", she told AFP. During the standoff, Lakdim requested the release of Salah Abdeslam, the sole surviving assailant of the November 13, 2015, attacks in Paris that left 130 people dead.
