Popular Serial Subject Adnan Syed Has Been Granted A New Trial

"Trial counsel's deficient performance prejudiced Syed's defense", the two Special Appeals judges wrote, "because, but for trial counsel's failure to investigate [McClain], there is a reasonably probability that McClain's alibi testimony would have raised a reasonable doubt in the mind of at least one juror about Syed's involvement [in] Hae's murder, and thus 'the result of the proceedings would have been different'".

In 2016, a lower court judge vacated Syed's conviction and ruled that he deserved a new trial because his original attorney failed to cross-examine a key witness.

The witness is Asia Chapman, who said she saw Syed at the library in Woodlawn around the same time prosecutors say Lee was killed and that Syed couldn't be the killer. Lee's body was found in 1999 in a Baltimore park, following her disappearance weeks earlier.

The ruling could be appealed to the Court of Appeals, the state's highest court, which would mean many more months before Syed finds out whether his conviction will remain or if he will get a new trial. But the state appealed that ruling.

A Baltimore Circuit Court judge threw out Syed's conviction in 2016 based on another contested issue - questionable cell tower evidence. But it remains a possibility that prosecutors will appeal Thursday's decision to Maryland's highest court, the Court of Appeals.

In the meantime, Syed's current attorney, Justin Brown, has celebrated the decision, tweeting in all-caps: "WE WON THE APPEAL".

According to the Baltimore Sun, the office of the Maryland Attorney General is "currently reviewing today's decision to determine next steps".

"We hope that they (the state) will come to the conclusion that this has gone on long enough" and not appeal the ruling, Brown told a press conference. Further information regarding Syed's retrial, including a court date, has not been released.
