Uber Tried to Cut Costs On Its Self-Driving Car Too Quickly

Uber self driving sensors

The incident marked the first pedestrian death stemming from a traffic accident involving a self-driving vehicle and while preliminary results of Tempe PD's investigation suggest the autonomous Uber auto wasn't at fault for the accident, the firm promptly suspended all of its driverless technology trials throughout the United States.

San Francisco-based Uber did not immediately reply to a request for comment. In a statement late Tuesday, an Uber spokeswoman said: "We believe that technology has the power to make transportation safer than ever before and recognise our responsibility to contribute to safety in our communities". The exact nature of "autonomous mode" at that time has not been clarified by Uber. This week however, the governor of Arizona Douglas Ducey rescinded Uber's right to test AVs in the state.

March 20, 2018, photo provided by the National Transportation Safety Board, investigators examine a driverless Uber SUV that fatally struck a woman in Tempe, Ariz.

Emails discovered by The Guardian illustrate Arizona Governor Doug Ducey's questionably close relationship with Uber.

Technology giants, automakers, and vehicle parts companies, sometimes in alliance, are racing toward a future where cars driving themselves whisk people wherever they wish.

Other footage showed that in the seconds before the accident, the human safety driver behind the wheel was mostly looking down, not at the road. "The Governor's Executive Order allowing for the operation and testing of driverless cars was signed a year prior to this email being sent".

Uber decided last week to suspend tests on public roads in California, Pennsylvania, Arizona and Ontario. The fall-out from the accident could impede the research, development, and testing of self-driving vehicles. The governor's office said it provided the emails to the newspaper in September.

"We want you to know Arizona does want Uber". Experts told The Associated Press that the technology on Uber's vehicle should have spotted (name her) the pedestrian and the failure revealed a serious flaw.

He said the Uber accident will not impact Baidu's autonomous driving development plans.

Uber's newer Volvo test vehicles only use a single, roof-mounted lidar, along with 10 radars and seven cameras, Reuters found.

Uber has about 200 vehicles at all four testing locations.
