The driver attempted to ram his vehicle into troops jogging outside their base in Varces-Allieres-et-Risset, near Grenoble, who threw themselves in a ditch to escape the auto.

The vegan lives in Saint Gaudens, a village not far from the Pyrenees mountains and the town of Trebes, hit by last week's attack.

Today, the four victims of the attack in the town of Carcassonne and nearby Trebes, including the heroic officer Arnaud Beltrame, will be laid to rest in the region. He also shot dead the passenger of a vehicle he hijacked in Carcassonne.

Lakdim was shot dead by police.

Lakdim, who had a criminal record, was on a watchlist of suspected radicals, but authorities had concluded that he did not pose a threat.

France also suffered major attacks in Paris in November 2015 when IS jihadists killed 130 people at bars, restaurants, the Bataclan concert venue and the national stadium. In August, police shot and arrested a man who deliberately rammed his auto into soldiers beginning a patrol in a plush Paris suburb, injuring six.
