Bavuma, Bowlers Put South Africa in Control Against Australia

The late nip generated by the pacers off a brownish wicket resulted in Markram playing and missing a few times and also getting the leading edge although no damage was done

Temba Bavuma's unbeaten half-century has tightened South Africa's grip on a first home series win over a scandal-hit Australia in nearly 50 years, steering his side to 400 for seven at lunch on the second day of the fourth and final test at the Wanderers.

Bavuma was within sight of his second Test century, when Pat Cummins, the Australian fast bowler, took two wickets with successive balls to finish off the innings.

Australia were reeling at 110 for six at the end of the second day in reply to South Africa's imposing first innings total of 488. "To start afresh, I thought it was a great gesture just to show everyone that there are people behind this cricket and they have feelings too".

It was consistent with a series where Cummins has not only been the standout Australian player, but has been disproportionately burdened with carrying the side.

Australia's performance in the fourth and final Test against the Proteas at the Wanderers has confirmed the concerns heading into the contest.

Australia made four changes from the last Test, replacing the banned trio with Joe Burns, Matt Renshaw and Handscombe.

It was only going to be hard for Burns and Renshaw, who are in the starting line-up because of banned ball- temperers Cameron Bancroft and David Warner, as they have never faced a ball in South Africa before. Although he reviewed immediately, a discernible spike on Snicko meant de Villiers was restricted to his third successive score in the 60s.

Wicketkeeper Tim Paine captained the side in Johannesburg as the tourists looked to move on at the Wanderers.

Australia found a way to fight back in the right way.

Australia's Pat Cummins was the silver lining for the Australian bowlers, with Chadd Sayers getting two wickets on day one of his debut.

Debutant Chadd Sayers ( two for 64) removed AB de Villiers (69) with the new ball and two deliveries later had nightwatchman Kagiso Rabada caught without scoring.

"To the fans and the lovers of the game, who have supported and inspired me on my journey as a cricketer, I want to sincerely apologise for betraying your trust in me", Warner said.

Markkram scored his fourth Test ton on the opening day.

Electing to bat first, South Africa made a solid start to their innings as Markram and Dean Elgar amassed a 53-run partnership before Elgar was dismissed by Nathan Lyon for 19.

Earlier in Sydney, deposed vice-captain Warner said he realised he may never play for Australia again as he tearfully apologised over the ball-tampering scandal.

"We've tried to really care for each other this week", said Saker.
