Zuckerberg, Cook Continue to Insult Each Other

The argument here, essentially, is that Apple makes its money off the small fraction of people who can afford to pay sometimes-outlandish prices for technology, while Facebook makes money off large corporations while we regular folk get to use the service for free.

Then in an interview with MSNBC and Recode on 28 March, Mr Cook said: "I think the best regulation is no regulation, is self-regulation". When asked what he would do if he were in Zuckerberg's shoes, Cook said he "wouldn't be in [that] situation" to begin with.

"You know, I find that argument, that if you're not paying that somehow we can't care about you, to be extremely glib and not at all aligned with the truth".

Facebook is taking an additional step to safeguard and prevent misuse of user information, after facing considerable backlash following the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

"The reality here is that if you want to build a service that helps connect everyone in the world, then there are a lot of people who can't afford to pay", he stated. "And therefore, as with a lot of media, having an advertising-supported model is the only rational model that can support building this service to reach people".

Which company cares about you more?

In the interview, Zuckerberg also responded to criticism from Apple Inc. "We've elected not to do that".

In other words: Apple prioritizes privacy because it can.

If taken at face value, Zuckerberg's claim that users share information because they trust Facebook to protect it could spell trouble for the company now that that trust has been rocked by scandal. Politicians in the United Kingdom and the European Union have also requested Zuckerberg to come explain how Facebook protects the privacy of its 2 billion monthly users, and Missouri's attorney general announced Monday that he is launching a wide-ranging probe into Facebook.

But if Facebook continues to be beholden to advertisers, will the company be able to regain the trust of users?

But on Vox's latest "The Ezra Klein Show" podcast, Zuckerberg pointedly dismissed Cook's ideas about Facebook. But he admitted his company failed to forsee how bad actors could abuse the platform. "Frankly, we didn't spend enough time investing in, or thinking through, some of the downside uses of the tools", he said. "I think we will dig through this hole, but it will take a few years", he added.

Elsewhere in the 49-minute interview, Mr Zuckerberg said he hoped to make Facebook more "democratic" by giving members a chance to challenge decisions its own review team had taken about what content to permit or ban.
