Saudis, UAE draw praise for pledging $1 billion in aid for Yemen

Saudi soldiers stand guard before aid supplies are unloaded from a Saudi air force cargo plane at an airfield in Yemen's central Province of Ma’arib

A Saudi oil tanker was targeted by the Iran-aligned Houthi movement on Tuesday afternoon local time off Yemen's port of Hodeidah, sustaining minor damages and completing its course north, Saudi-owned Al Arabiya reported, citing the Arab coalition that is fighting the Houthis in Yemen.

Guterres told reporters that in addition to the $2bn already committed, multiple countries had promised more donations in the coming months, leaving him "optimistic that we will be able to reach the level that corresponds to the needs".

Tensions have been rising in recent days after the Houthis, who control most of northern Yemen, launched a series of missile strikes on Saudi Arabia, including the capital Riyadh, in recent days.

The UN on Tuesday said $2.96 billion was needed to provide humanitarian aid for around 13.1 million Yemenis, whose country has been destroyed by a civil war.

"Yemen is the world's worst humanitarian crisis", Guterres said, calling the situation "catastrophic".

"Independent of the fact that there is a war, there are humanitarian obligations that are assumed by countries", he said.

"We need to find the ideal solution which is a return to the talks table, to put an end the war, to return to a sustainable system supported by the people of Yemen", he said, adding that this should include "the putschist parties" - referring to the Houthis - and those supported by the global community.

"We must see action to end the conflict. There are no humanitarian solutions to humanitarian crises". "The solution has always been political". It includes $930 million from Saudi Arabia and the UAE which lead the coalition air strikes.

The UN s Yemen envoy, Martin Griffiths, has recently visited Riyadh and Sanaa in hopes of revitalising sputtering peace talks.

The war has killed more than 10,000 people, displaced more than two million and driven the country - already the poorest on the Arabian Peninsula - to the verge of starvation.

While the coalition has eased the blockade, restrictions on deliveries persist.

The UN chief also appealed for ports to be kept open for food and aid to reach those who need it, adding that Sana'a airport is a "lifeline that must be kept open".
