Apple Developing iPhone With Curved Display

Apple's entry-level iPad tablet is now compatible with the company's Pencil stylus a device that once only worked with high-end iPad Pro models

A new Bloomberg report from the often reliable Mark Gurman details two major changes that could be on the horizon for Apple's upcoming smartphone. For example, the Moto Actions feature enables users to turn the lock screen on and off by waving a hand, among other things.

Apple is working on touchless gesture control and curved screens for future iPhones, projects that may help the company differentiate its most-important product in an increasingly crowded market, according to people with knowledge of the matter. Apple introduced pressure-sensitive displays with the addition of 3D Touch following the release of the iPhone 6s and the Apple Watch, though few apps take advantage of the feature in a way that makes sense.

Thus far, every iPhone has used a flat display design with the possible exception of the iPhone X. The iPhone X's OLED screen curves slightly at the bottom, but the shape is mostly invisible to the human eye.

The sources say the tech won't be ready for "at least two years" and there's still a chance Apple may not follow through on the current R&D work. Judging by the description of the display, the phone is likely to have a rather large screen and an OLED panel, given that only OLEDs can curve easily.

The second experimental feature in Bloomberg's report relates to Apple designing iPhones with a display that curves inwards in the middle.

Both features are still in the early research and development stage and Apple could choose to not go forward with the enhancements.

An Apple spokeswoman, however, declined to comment on this. Though it sounds like Apple's version of touchless gestures will be a bit different on how they are implemented. The gestures wouldn't need to be close to the screen like how Apple is developing its gesture feature.
