Earthquake Rattles Los Angeles Area in Southern California - USGS

Earthquake of magnitude 6.2 strikes off Mindanao in Philippines, reports USGS

The quake, which struck about 86 miles from Los Angeles around 12:30 p.m., registered a magnitude of 5.3, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Authorities in Los Angeles and Ventura counties did not report any immediate damage.

The Tsunami Warning System in the Pacific has not issued a tsunami alert. Eyewitness News viewers reported feeling shaking in downtown Los Angeles, Koreatown, West Los Angeles and Santa Monica.

Seismologist Lucy Jones told NBC Los Angeles: "This is a completely normal sort of natural disaster for Southern California".

The Los Angeles Fire Department is now surveying the Los Angeles area for any damages or injuries, Chief Ralph Terrazas said in a Twitter post.

AN quake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale has hit California.

Los Angeles police also made checks of "infrastructure and critical locations".

People living in areas such as Tarzana, San Dimas, Long Beach, Pomona and Torrance reported shaking, with a number of residents taking to Twitter when the quake happened.

LA's National Weather Service has said there are no tsunami warnings in place as of yet.

By comparison, the 1994 Northridge, California, natural disaster registered at a 6.7 magnitude, killing more than 60 people and injuring thousands of others. In other words, the rate of a magnitude 8.0 or greater quake is once per 494 years.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department was also assessing the region for damage. This result was disputed by the USGS, which put the probability at 85 percent, which is hardly more reassuring. "You can't change chance of EQ (earthquake) but you can reduce the chance of damage".
