Round 1 of the Masters at a glance

Tiger Woods watches his drive on the first hole during a practice round Wednesday for the Masters. It has been 13 years since Woods last won the event

McIlroy (69) and Mickelson (70) were well pleased with their starts on Thursday, a day when Jordan Spieth took advantage of benign afternoon conditions to set a cracking pace at six-under 66 at Augusta National.

Garcia carded a 13 on the par-5 15th after hitting four shots into the water in front of the green. His 13 is the equal-highest score on any hole in Masters history, and the highest-ever by two at the 15 hole.

Tom Weiskopf had a 13 at No. 12 in 1980 and Tsuneyuki "Tommy" Nakajima did it at No. 13 in 1978. He made a 10-foot putt - close to the same length of his eagle putt when he won past year - to make a 13, the highest score ever recorded on No. 15.

To the delight of the sympathetic crowd, Garcia birdied the next hole but the world number nine cut a dazed figure as he completed his round.

But on No. 15 Thursday, in a Masters that could be defined by the crowded and charismatic leaderboards it produces, Garcia and Augusta National engaged in one of their old tussles, the kind - prior to past year - that the course always won by knockout. But Ghim went on to eagle the par-4 18th which was hard enough just to par for much of the field.

Day made an bad start, four-over after seven.

Charley Hoffman sits atop the leaderboard at 4 under.

"Fore, please. Tiger Woods now driving".

The Lehi resident shot a 4-under-par 68.

Finau had the ankle tested, arrived early at the course on Thursday and decided he could play. "Otherwise it's just short right of the green, an easy up and down from there". "And if it probably carries a foot less, it probably doesn't go off the green and probably stays on the fringe".

The 14-time major victor, however, would not sign off without giving the massive audience that followed him all day something to cheer, hitting back with birdies at 14 and 16. He received X-rays, which were negative, but did not finish the event.

He was planning to play through the pain. The 13 he posted at No. 15 pushed him to an 81 for his day. "Thanks for thoughts of concern, messages and prayers from all".

An upbeat Rory McIlroy believes he will be firmly in contention for Masters glory if he can replicate his day-one performance level for the rest of the weekend at Augusta.

Woods nearly drove the green at the par-4 No. 3, pitched to about 10 feet and made the putt to set off a huge "Tiger Roar" at Augusta National.

It is his first Masters but he needed clearance from a doctor this morning after an MRI to ensure that his ankle was not broken. He finished tied for 17th that year.

The 11th brought more trouble as his tee shot sailed way right of the fairway. He chipped out and missed a 20-footer for par.

Playing partner Marc Leishman provided even more highlights, as did Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford, B.C.

"Seeing it", said Boyd Summerhays, Finau's swing coach, "your heart just sinks".

Finau made a hole-in-one in front of his son in the par-3 tournament on Wednesday, sprinted toward the hole and turned his left ankle into an illustration of a dogleg.

Considering the buildup that accompanied his first competitive round at Augusta National since 2015, it might've seemed like a bit of a letdown.

Of course, Garcia was minus-92 on par 5s until Thursday. He putted past the hole and left the comebacker on the left edge. He dropped to one knee and ended up pushing the joint back into place.

"He loves this golf course, plays well around here, he always has".

The 82nd Masters has begun. I started to see some things last week, got some momentum.

The 28-year-old Finau collected six birdies and two bogeys during his stellar round. "Coming up to the first tee, the people came out of the clubhouse and the putting green, they're really into it".

The other player was a surprise to even tee it up on Thursday.
