Russian Federation says evacuation from Syria's eastern Ghouta to end within days

Ghouta Falls in Syrian Regime's Clutches

Geneva: The UN humanitarian adviser for Syria called on Wednesday for access to the eastern Ghouta town of Douma, where he said some 80,000-150,000 civilians were "on their knees" after years of siege and fighting.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed the news, saying that a deal brokered by regime ally Russian Federation would see fighters with the Jaish al-Islam faction leave Ghouta's main town of Douma for opposition-held territory in northern Syria.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group reported earlier in the day Russia's military police would be deployed inside Douma to take custodianship of the town.

The Saudi-backed group, which has deep roots in the region, has held firm in recent weeks as virtually all the other insurgents of eastern Ghouta have reached deals to relocate to the rebel-held north, leaving Douma as the only remaining rebel holdout. "There are divisions among the Jaish al-Islam group on their leaving but we are continuing preparations", the military source said.

There was no immediate comment from the Army of Islam.

Turkey, Russia and Iran also said that they were already committed to achieve a "lasting ceasefire" in Syria, in a joint statement issued following their meeting held in the Turkish capital of Ankara.

If confirmed, the departure of Jaish Al Islam from Douma would mark the end of the war for eastern Ghouta, wiping out an opposition stronghold near Damascus and underlining President Bashar Al Assad's unassailable position in the war.

However, Jaish al-Islam has yet to confirm the report and only said on Saturday that it had agreed to evacuate the wounded to Idlib in northwestern Syria.

It says a local council for Douma will be formed with the approval of the central government.

Damascus:China has donated $1 million in aid to the World Food Programme (WFP) in Syria to purchase food for the war-stricken Syrians, the Chinese Embassy in Syria has said.

A journalist who was at the meeting, said that after the meeting the three leaders expressed their increase in hope for peaceful solution in the Syrian crisis in light of the latest achievements after their trilateral talks.

Russian Federation is a key backer of Assad.

The government offensive in Ghouta has been one of the deadliest of the war, killing more than 1,600 civilians, according to the Observatory.

It was here that rebels transported weaponry and ammunition across eastern Ghouta.
