The Powell Federal Reserve

NAIRU Fed projections Federal Reserve March 2013

In its first policy meeting under new Fed chief Jerome Powell, the U.S. central bank indicated that inflation should finally move higher after years below its 2 per cent target and that the economy had recently gained momentum.

The the "dot plot" - a graphic representation of where the Fed members see rates moving to over the next year or so - suggests an extra rate rise next year and the 3.4% mid point in 2020 is higher (one rate hike in fact) than the previous estimate of 3.1% at the December meeting under former chair Janet Yellen.

Put another way, he's aiming for the central bank's fabled "soft landing", a goal the Fed has arguably never achieved.

This debt is based on the banks' prime loan rate, the interest rate used as a starting point for nonmortgage loans.

During the announcement, the Fed did not waver from the previously forecast three hikes for 2018, but did provide a steeper outline for hikes in 2019 and 2020, citing an improving economic outlook.

There was no dissent from the decision, but more important was the outlook - three rate rises in total for this year, and a total of 8 by 2020, indicating a Federal Funds rate of 3.40% in two and a half years time.

A healthy job market and a steady if unspectacular economy have given the Fed the confidence to think the economy can withstand further increases within a still historically low range of borrowing rates.

Documents issued by the central bank show that its monetary policy committee has a strong consensus for at least two more rate hikes this year, with growing sentiment that the rate could approach 2.5% by the end of 2018. The reason for this widely expected rate hike is historically low unemployment rate in the United States and the confidence in the growth of the USA economy, which is picking up strongly.

In its latest forecast, the Fed predicted the US would grow 2.7% this year and 2.4% next year - well above the 1.8% pace that the central bank views as consistent with stable inflation. Policymakers predict the unemployment rate to fall to 3.8 per cent this year and 3.6 per cent next year. The 2018 forecast remains just 1.9 percent for both core and headline inflation. This is the fourth hike within a year. "Like any set of forecasts, those forecasts will change over time", he said.

YDSTIE: For now, Powell said, he does not see any sign inflation is accelerating. The Fed "will have to go some to really move the needle on market thinking or indeed, to take the dollar out of its current range and the FX market out of its mindset", said Kit Juckes, chief FX Strategist at Societe Generale. The Fed also outstandingly augments its prediction for US growth the two successive years. The Fed started out at 4.25% six years ago and it's ratcheted down its forecast to a recent low of 2.8%.

The S&P 500 Index of U.S. stocks stayed higher after the release, while the yield on 10-year U.S. Treasury notes rose slightly, to 2.91%.
