Sensex, Nifty open higher on hopes of easing of trade tensions

"Metal and realty outperformed due to ease in global trade tensions while surge in oil price and bond yield refrained heavy weights from participating", Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Financial Services Ltd, said.

The broader NSE Nifty too fell 35.50 points, or 0.34 per cent, to 10,366.75.

In the morning, Sensex opened marginally lower at 33,866, down 13 points while Nifty was trading at around 10,399.95. Earlier, the gauge had gained over 750 points in the previous three sessions.

The rupee's appreciation against the dollar and widening of bets by investors amid optimism ahead of the earnings season also supported the uptrend, they said.

On Tuesday, foreign institutional investors sold scrips worth Rs 684.99 crore, while the domestic institutional investors purchased stocks worth Rs 653.65 crore, provisional data with the exchanges showed.

Positive leads from other Asian markets, a higher opening in European shares and overnight gains at Wall Street also bolstered trading sentiment here. SBI finished 2.4 per cent lower while PNB fell 2.9 per cent.

Financials were the top losers with the Nifty PSU Bank index down 2 percent after gaining more than 7 percent in the last four sessions. The Cash Market Benchmark Index Small Cap made a high of 8272 and closed at 8215 after making a low of 8175.

Gainers include ONGC, up 1.47 per cent, TCS 1.31 per cent, Sun Pharma 1.08 per cent and Reliance 0.89 per cent. Nasdaq gained over 0.51 percent while S&P 500 was up by 0.33 percent.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was 0.35 per cent higher.
