Attack on Syrian air base kills 14

The statement came as Damascus and Moscow blamed Israel for a missile strike early on Monday on Syria's Tayfur (T-4) airbase.

Syrian state news agency Sana first said the missile strike on the Tayfur base was a "suspected USA attack", but later withdrew all reference to America. "Along the Gaza border, we don't let anyone touch us".

"The Syrian army's use of chemicals does not seem logical since it has the upper-hand in its war against armed terrorists", stressed Qassemi.

USA strikes are not going to alter the Assad Government's trajectory "and they may make things worse", said Emile Hokayem of the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

"Representatives of the governments of Syria and Iran today expressed their countries" will to intensify their coordination against the threats made by Israel, the United States and their allies against this Arab country.

Pan-European air traffic control agency Eurocontrol on Tuesday warned airlines to exercise caution in the eastern Mediterranean due to the possible launch of air strikes into Syria in next 72 hours.

Israel did not acknowledge carrying out the strike.

The global watchdog working to eradicate chemical weapons is investigating reports of a suspected poison gas attack on the Syrian rebel-held town of Douma, its head said on Monday.

First responders entering apartments in Douma late Saturday said they found bodies collapsed on floors, some foaming at the mouth.

Shrine defenders is a phrase that Iran uses for its advisers sent to Syria to aid the Syrian army against terrorists.

Russian Federation and Syria deny that chemical weapons were used.

The Observatory says it wasn't immediately clear who was behind the attack.

Over 10 people were killed in the pre-dawn attack on the T-4 airbase near Homs.

Sanaa: Yemeni tribal officials say a Saudi-led coalition airstrike has killed at least 15 people, including children, in the southwestern city of Taiz. He said that Washington had "a lot of options militarily" on Syria. The U.S. threatened military action but later backed down.

"If Assad has boxed us into a position where we've got to throw some missiles at him, it doesn't really change the picture". After the airstrikes were reported, however, Pentagon spokesman Christopher Sherwood said in a statement: "At this time, the Department of Defense is not conducting air strikes in Syria". A larger one would run the risk of confrontation with Iran and Russian Federation, who have both repeatedly expressed their desire to see the United States leave Syria.

In Block's view, "whatever the debate over the JCPOA - the nuclear agreement signed between Iran, six world powers and the European Union in 2015 - a robust consensus in Congress is needed that Iran's military role in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and elsewhere must be countered". Iran also could also push back against the United States in places such as Iraq, where USA troops are present.

Israel's foreign ministry had no comment when asked about the accusations.

"The Cuban missile crisis might be the template Putin is looking at right now", he said.

Rami Abdurrahman, the Observatory's chief, said the assault targeted a mobile air defence unit and some buildings inside the air base.

"The timing of the strike isn't coincidental", he said.

If and when the Iranians decide to attack Israel, he added, they will not do so from their own territory.

"A military intervention under far-fetched and fabricated pretexts in Syria, where there are Russian soldiers at the request of the legitimate Syrian government, is absolutely unacceptable and could have the most dire consequences", it said.
