Commonwealth Games: Cameroonian athletes disappear

New Zealand's David Liti won gold in the men's 105kg+ division and set a Commonwealth Games record

With only four days left in the 2018 Commonwealth Games, an unexpected storyline has surfaced.

"No (I'm not panicking) We are still in the middle of the journey, and I previously said that there are two teams (to watch out for), namely England and India, and tonight (April 9) India have beaten Malaysia, and this is not necessarily an unsatisfactory performance".

"Then on [April 9] two others were declared missing and last night three others left their rooms".

The Games have welcomed more than 6,600 athletes and team officials from 71 Commonwealth nations and territories to the Gold Coast and event cities Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville, to share in the celebration of sport, entertainment and culture.

Weightlifter Olivier Matam and boxers Ndzie Tchoyi and Simplice Fotsala have not been found since they failed to take part in their respective competitions this week.

The missing group comprises five boxers and three weightlifters, with two of the athletes not bothering to turn up to compete.

Nso said team officials had notified Australian police.

Mentor, who is from Bournemouth and plays her club netball for Sunshine Coast Lightning in Australia, said beating New Zealand, the No 2-ranked team in the world after Australia, in a major tournament was a breakthrough, despite the Kiwis' faltering form.

Bernard Sam and Celia Baah-Danso lost 3-0 to Yan Xin and Lay Jian Fang of Australia in the mixed doubles round of 64.

"[We have] no other information, nobody knows where they went".

Authorities have held talks with local African community leaders, who say they have not had any contact from the missing athletes.

The missing athletes were last seen at different times on Monday and Tuesday, according to Molombe.

"We would appreciate them sticking within the law, enjoying themselves, but sticking within the law", organising committee boss Peter Beattie told reporters.

"I think it is also important to remember that these athletes are guests here in Australia and are still within their visas and have the right to travel freely".

"But this is obviously an issue that Team Cameroon is monitoring very, very closely".

In 2012, five Cameroonian male boxers, a female footballer and a male swimmer absconded from the London Olympic village.

The Cameroonian athletes are nowhere according to reports meanwhile; they have valid visas until May 15, allowing them to spend another month legally in Australia.
