One Dead, Hundreds Injured in Latest Hamas-Led Gaza Riots

Killing of Palestinian journalist protested in Istanbul

The Israeli rights group B'Tselem said Friday that open-fire policy must not be dictated by worst case scenarios, such as a feared mass breach of the border. During this period, 27 Palestinians have been killed and hundreds wounded by army fire in the protests.

"The Israeli authorities must put an immediate end to the excessive and lethal force being used to suppress Palestinian demonstrations in Gaza", Amnesty International said Friday.

Palestinians began demonstrations and sit-ins on the anniversary of "Land Day".

The person died after he was transferred to receive treatment shortly after he was shot during a protest that is part of the Great March of Return.

The protests, planned to last six weeks, are calling for Palestinian refugees to return to their former homes that are now inside Israel - which Israelis said essentially amounts to calling for the country's destruction.

The heavy shooting of bullets and tear gas by Israeli army did not prevent women demonstrators from joining the weekly rallies in border areas.

Israeli forces fired tear gas, rubber-coated steel pellets and live rounds. Medics at the scene in the Rafah area said the explosion was caused by Israel. It has said some of those at the border tried to damage the fence, planted explosives or hurled firebombs. One path toward lifting the blockade would be to have Hamas' political rival, West Bank-based Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, take over the Gaza government, but recent Egypt-led talks on such a deal appear to have run aground. One man threw a burning tire into the fence, while another was seen walking nearby with the help of a crutch. Some have said they intend to use mirrors and lasers to distract Israeli snipers, according to The Jerusalem Post.

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group said four of its members were killed in an apparent accidental blast in the Gaza Strip on Saturday. In today's briefing to the Security Council, the UN Secretary-General reiterated his deep concern about the clashes and casualties, and called for an independent and transparent investigation into the incident. On April 1, the US blocked a draft resolution by the U.N. Security Council that called for an investigation into the deaths of the 17 Palestinian protesters who had been killed up until that point.

The Members of Congress are urging Gaza protesters to carry out their right to assembly nonviolently, while also calling on members of Israel Defense Forces to exercise utmost restraint in the use of deadly force and to fully comply with global law.
