Barry Lewis: Facebook and the illusion of privacy

What Have We Learned From Facebook This Week

If we are going to continue to use Facebook, as users we must also learn how to crackdown on the site and protect ourselves.

Earlier this week, the company announced the launch of the Data Abuse Bounty to reward Facebook users who report any misuse of data by app developers. Ever since the scandal came to light in February, Facebook has been having a tough time dealing with accusations that the company was responsible for the leak of personal data of millions of users. "We've got to fix that". Zuckerberg did not respond. While it is owned by Facebook, he said Instagram is a powerful marketing platform.

To add fuel to fire, the ability to capture data and turn it into insights to help advertisers "better engage with audiences" makes for even better ROIs but reinforces the fact that "people are the product". "It's not clear what Facebook is doing with that information", said Chris Calabrese, vice president for policy at the Center for Democracy & Technology, a Washington advocacy group.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg patiently explained his platform to occasionally befuddled US lawmakers without making any promises to overhaul it in the face of regulation, in a marathon two-day Congressional hearing to address the social media giant's use and potential misuse of personal data.

Elsewhere, a prominent Democratic digital ad consultant notes that Facebook hasn't reached out directly to communicate any of the changes it's making - whether by phone, email or Facebook - despite the fact he spent more than $1 million on Facebook ads past year.

Sarnecki suggests users to disable any apps on Facebook that they no longer use or trust by going to "Settings", and then "Apps and Websites".

In Ogg's mind, the recent news about Facebook presents agents with an opportunity to start looking at other social media platforms. They let a quiz app harvest the profiles of 87 million Facebook users. "Facebook said that Cambridge Analytica has been shut down", said Rudiantara.

Facebook isn't the only company that uses data in "creative" ways but what this last month or so highlights is that consent is a major issue.

Perhaps the main reason social media companies haven't tried pay models is because the ad-supported business has made them behemoths.

"You said that everyone controls their data, but you're collecting data on people who are not even Facebook users, that have never signed a consent, a privacy agreement."-U.S".

The government used the same law as a pretext when requesting that Facebook restrict 1,823 pieces of content in the year following the coup. The GDPR, aimed at bringing stronger data protection and more data privacy for citizens of the European Union, also has implications for United States firms that have a presence there. Facebook said on Friday that it does not do so.

That its legal domicile is in the U.S. but that it acts as a global company has brought problems for Facebook not just in the area of data protection, but also in the area of tax. Rep. Lujan investigated how to gain access to a record of data collected about non-users, and it's a Catch-22.

"I don't think Facebook can change too radically or they will see a loss in ad revenue", Republican media strategist Rory McShane told The Post. "The whistle was just blown but they were corrected 18 months ago, I don't think there is a need for a mad rush for businesses locally and in the region to stop advertising on Facebook because we haven't seen that reflected in how Barbadians are using the platform", he explained.

The social network would be wise to recognize at least a right to know, said Michael Froomkin, a University of Miami law professor.
