Facebook under fire for storing facial recognition data without consent

This new Facebook job posting is cause for concern

US District Judge James Donato ruled in a San Francisco federal court on Monday that a class-action lawsuit was the most efficient way to resolve the dispute.

"We continue to believe the case has no merit and will defend ourselves vigorously", a Facebook rep said of the suit, which first popped up back in 2015.

The biometric data was collected through the use of the tag suggestions technology that helps users spot their friends in uploaded photos.

The action is on behalf of users in the U.S. state "for whom Facebook created and stored a face template after June 7, 2011", when the company introduced a Tag Suggestions feature which used facial recognition to try and determine the subject's identity based on an existing database of faces. Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) users in IL sued the company in 2015 for violating a state privacy law.

The company has been trying for years to dismiss the case and even pushed for a legislative proposal that would render the IL law harmless.

A United States federal judge on Monday ruled Facebook will have to face a class action lawsuit that alleges the social media giant used facial recognition on photos without user permission.

The new feature in the location-based app, which has 30 million-plus user base, would be launch on Tuesday, Wired reported late on Monday.

The European Union's digital chief is also slated to meet with the embattled CEO amid increasing criticisms from activists in Europe that the company is engaging in manipulative and deceitful conduct in order to impose facial surveillance on European users.

Over the last few weeks, Facebook has drawn intense criticism from users and governments globally over a number of issues, ranging from false news on the platform to information of over 80 million users being mined by data analytics and political consulting firm, Cambridge Analytica.

The plaintiffs claim Facebook collects and stores their biometric data without prior notice or consent, the ruling said.

As the scandal unfolded, the Electronic Privacy Information Center said it would challenge Facebook's use of facial recognition with the Federal Trade Commission.

Folks can, of course, turn off the service via Facebook's privacy settings.
