One E.coli case confirmed in MI linked to romaine lettuce

35 sick from E. Coli outbreak traced to romaine lettuce

The restaurants used to have bagged, chopped romaine lettuce in order to make the salads.

The CDC tracked the infections across eleven states to romaine lettuce from Yuma, Arizona, but no brand or grower has been identified, according to the CDC. Since the outbreak was potentially linked to lettuce grown in Yuma, Arizona, the CDC says only lettuce from these regions should be avoided. Confirmed and suspected cases have also been identified in Missoula, Lincoln and Ravalli counties.

"Consumers anywhere in the United States who have store-bought chopped romaine lettuce at home, including salads and salad mixes containing chopped romaine lettuce, should not eat it and should throw it away, even if some of it was eaten and no one has gotten sick", the CDC said in a statement.

As of Friday, no deaths were reported in the latest outbreak but three of those sickened developed a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome, the CDC reported.

Montana has experienced two E. Coli outbreaks in the past three years, according to Hinnenkamp. Most will get better within a week, but the symptoms can last longer and be severe.

Illnesses have been reported in CT (2), Idaho (8), IL (1), MI (1), Missouri (1), New Jersey (7), NY (2), OH (2), Pennsylvania (9), Virginia (1), and Washington (1). "Anyone experiencing symptoms of this illness should see a healthcare provider".

Laura Gieraltowski, Ph.D., M.P.H., who leads the Foodborne Outbreak Response Team at the CDC, predicts there will be more reports of illness in the days and weeks ahead. Resturants and retailers should not serve or sell the chopped romaine lettuce which includes salads and salad mixes containing chopped romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona growing region.

This recommendation goes beyond the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendation, which is to confirm that any bagged romaine didn't originate in the Yuma area before purchasing. Twenty-six (93%) of 28 people interviewed reported consuming romaine lettuce in the week before their illness started.
